Owen County’s Guardian Martial Arts Dojo Serves As Host Site For Karate Training Camp

Professor Leon Jay, Grandmaster of Small Circle Jujitsu doesn’t exactly look to be in his 50’s, and he certainly doesn’t move like he’s 50. This was evident Saturday afternoon on the dojo floor of Guardian Martial Arts on Little Flock Road in rural southeastern Owen County.

Professor Jay made a trip to Master Gary Cunningham’s personal dojo from London, England, but first made a pit stop in Long Beach, California, where he met up with several other martial arts masters. The reasoning for their visit to Guardian Martial Arts wasn’t just to catch up, but to train as part of the Professor Jay’s Small Circle Jujitsu 2009 Midwest Camp as nearly 100 martial artists were in attendance to learn from the very best.

Huge Success for Museum's 6th Annual Event
Nearly 500 people arrived with tuxedo's, evening gowns and suits to honour the contributions of six key pioneers of the martial arts community.
The event, which is unmatched in the industry, took place at the Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park, CA with special guest California State Senator Richard Alarcon.
Families and friends from New York, Hawaii, England, Kansas City and more came together in reunion fashion to pay tribute to their instructor, their friend, their teacher, their relative, their father and mother at the Museum Ceremony.

Unlike any other event, the Museum Ceremony does a full background on each inductee. A video biography of their martial arts life is displayed on a huge screen as their family and friends learn about each pioneer. A Museum statue is then presented to them by a presenter of their choice. "I will never forget this event for the rest of my life," notes Professor Wally Jay, one of the six honourees of the evening.

sammy spacer The Hall of Fame Samurai Statue - "The Sammy"
It's not a plaque, it's not a store-bought trophy and it's not a certificate. The Hall of Fame Award (nicked-named the "Sammy" by Stephen Hayes' students), is a custom-designed and custom-made award that is worthy of a Hall of Famer.

As martial artists, we have sacrificed so much for the love of our art. The Sammy is an award that is worthy just a portion of that sacrifice.
The Samurai Statue is the official statue for the Martial Arts Hall of
Fame. It's concept and design are exclusive to the Martial Arts History Museum. Any reproduction of this statue or a statue similar to this will result in legal action by the holder of the design and production.

Every statue is custom-made for each inductee prior to the Museum Ceremony by famed sculpture Richard Wade.

This is the substantial engraved statue awarded to Wally. He was introduced by son Leon Jay who flew in for the ceremony all the way from Epsom, England! After a short film on Wally's life and accomplishments, the inductee was turned loose on the audience! *grin* He was in rare form!

His acceptance speech was super! Professor had everyone rolling in the aisles! Of course a standing ovation! :-)

He made us all very proud.
